Adventure is the harrowing and poignantly beautiful tale of Alice Hindman. In her early twenties Alice has a fleeting love affair with an older man; a journalist named Ned Currie. However, the affair means far more to Alice than it does to Ned, who leaves Winesburg for Chicago. After an initial exchange of letters Ned soon finds himself a new sweetheart leaving a tragically idealistic Alice vowing to “remain his wife whether he comes back or not.” As the years pass Alice keeps her word and stays loyal to Ned, and whose memory of seems to almost take possession of her. True to most stories in Winesburg, Ohio, Adventure shares a specific character’s past and present struggle to overcome the loneliness and isolation that seems to permeate small-town American life.
