Been a crazy week…in by the skin of our teeth this week…

You Are Tired (i think), by e e cummings

Read by Xe Sands

Xe writes…

Yes, a repeat…but one that I think quite a few of us could use this week. And it’s just where I’m at. Deadlines ate my day, so enjoy the revisit.

Tom Jones, Book VII, Chapter 8, by Henry Fielding

Read by Mark Turetsky

Mark writes…

Book 7 Chapter 8 of Tom Jones.

This is part of an ongoing project in which I will record and post one chapter per week of Henry Fielding’s Tom Jones over the course of four years.

We have here, at the opening of this chapter, another instance of Fielding violating his own rules about examining the inner thoughts of his characters in order to reveal their motivations. Honour the maid is having an inner struggle, much like Black George’s earlier in this book, to determine whether to run away with Sophia, or to rat her out to Squire Western. Her decision gets made for her, however, when she runs into Mrs. Western’s maid, who considers herself to be of a higher rank than Honour. This leads to Honour insulting both Mrs. Western and her maid, to Mrs. Western demanding Honour be fired, and finally to an all-out fist fight between the two maids.
